My Belief of dating, courtship, engagement and marriage

This week’s lessons were us continuing learning about the steps we take towards marriage. Each phase we go through prepares us to enjoy the greatest life choice, I believe we can make. Which is in fact marriage. I can understand why someone would feel the need to postpone marriage.   It’s a big step one that makes the biggest difference in our lives. Looking around us it also seems nothing is ever built to last very long. I mean look the statistics; they say the chances for a divorce is way over fifty percent. They go on to say that most married couples end their marriages at either year two or year five. Why enter into such an arrangement when hardship seems so absolute?   However, divorce doesn’t have to be seen as just a part of life. We can and should expect someone to be with us always as apart of our lives. I believe this can be a reality. We can start to prepare ourselves f...

Dating

In class we discussed about dating. Thinking about my experience dating, is a quiet humor of mine. My approach to dating could be seen as something laughable. Just, ask my brother I’m sure he’ll laugh for hours talking about it with you. Anyway, the biggest theme that was covered this week was the difference between hanging out and dating. The difference is dating is planned, paid for (preferably by the guy), and paired off.   Hangouts to me just requires people to exert the minimal effort to show up somewhere. I embraced this trend with my fellow cohort. Most people are afraid of rejection so they stick to the low pressure of a hangout. Perhaps, you’re like me and lack the ability for creativity and feels dating will suck the bank account dry. After dating seriously for so long maybe your heart just feels spent and needs a break. After experiencing 10 or so years of look for the best mate, learned a lot about making a complete fool of myself. My biggest mistake I feel I mad...

Gender

This week for my family Relations class we discussed gender and homosexual relationships. I learned things I didn’t understand before. Being a heterosexual male and always being that way. I don’t think I can ever know what it’s like to have same gender attraction. Diving deeper inside I understand it’s not about what’s I feel is wrong or right about it. Its about the person. Gay people are people and should be treated as such. They struggle with some the hardest things a person can encounter. A wounded gender ID, sexual abuse, bullying, and parental connections are few things yet encounter early in their life.   I acknowledge there is so much, sensitivity around sexual orientation, but I don’t understand why? If you desire a same sex attraction life so be it. If someone wants to change and I do believe change is possible then someone should be able to seek guidance with that. To say some is born that way is j...

The Role of Fathers

The things I learned about this week made me reflect on my childhood and how, I was raised by my parents. I recognize how blessed I was to know both sides of my biology. Having a dad in the home, I believe helped me find my identity. Knowing both parents plays a huge role in our lives. The research shows that having both parents present an increase in a child’s wellbeing. Academically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The results of these areas only improve when child rearing is done in the bounds of matrimony.             My parents got marriage in my mid-teens years and I love that my parents stayed together. There decision to be marriage made, marriage more important to me. Having my parents married made me feel closer to my father. Having a father present is especially important as well. Having a father/husband in the home prevents adverse impacts ...

Thoughts on Theory

This week for class we delved into theories and how they connect to our families. I admit I was standoff-ish at the thought, that families can be looked at so, scientifically. I didn’t think Family and Theory could be so, largely connected. I admit, my understanding of what a theory means as improved this week. After all I am seeking to be proficient in family and marriage life. grasping a new understanding of these family phenomena was eye opening and as I share a few things I hope they will be eye opening to you too.             There are so, many families out there and each family varies from the next. What would be the purpose to study something so variable? As I have learned this week its worth the time to find the ways each family is similar. Out of the difference, we find patterns that could help find explanations to why families do what they do. Of course, theories aren’t facts or concrete truth. Yet, they are impor...
